The “Super Mario Bros. Film” has earned a whopping $1.3 billion at the box office so far, allowing the production to claim the second spot on the list of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. Falling to the third position on the list is “Frozen,” which has accumulated $1.28 billion.

While “Frozen” now sits at the bottom of the podium, the top spot for the highest-grossing animated film of all time is still held by the story of Elsa with “Frozen 2.” To surpass that production as well, the “Super Mario Bros. Film” would need to earn an additional $150 million.

As noted by Variety, the computer-generated remake of “The Lion King” actually earned even more, reaching $1.65 billion. However, Disney does not categorize it as an animated film, so it does not appear on the aforementioned list. In terms of the overall highest-grossing films of all time, without distinction between live-action, documentary, or animated films, “Super Mario Bros. Film” currently holds the nineteenth position. If it manages to earn another $50 million, it will surpass productions such as “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” and “Black Panther.”

“Super Mario Bros. Film” tells the story of two New York plumbers, Mario and Luigi, who are transported to two alternate worlds. While Mario lands in the peaceful Mushroom Kingdom, Luigi finds himself in the clutches of the villainous Bowser, whose ambition is to destroy various worlds, including the Mushroom Kingdom. The film’s screenplay is based on the popular video game.

Since its premiere, “Super Mario Bros. Film” has broken several records. It is currently the highest-grossing film of 2023 both in the North American and global markets. It is also the highest-grossing video game adaptation in history. This collaboration between Universal Studios, Illumination, and the video game producer Nintendo marks the beginning of a new universe based on the themes of Nintendo’s games. It is known that one of the upcoming productions will be a film featuring Donkey Kong, voiced by Seth Rogen, who also provided his voice in “Super Mario Bros. Film.”
