What a thrilling final that was! World No. 1 Iga Swiatek defeated World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in the Saturday final of Madrid Open 2024 in a three-hour & 11-minutes long battle. It is only May now and the encounter is now being dubbed as “the match of the year.”

Both players were playing brilliantly displaying the highest quality of their tennis game. However, it was Iga Swiatek who came on top after defending three match points to win an unmissable tie-breaker to succeed 7-5, 4-6, 7-6[7] in the longest final of the 2024 season so far.

The title in Madrid marked the 20th career victory for 22-year-old Iga Swiatek and her third of the season. She is the youngest player to reach 20 titles since Caroline Wozniacki in 2012.

“For sure when I look back in maybe a few years, it will mean a lot. But for now, I’m just happy that I won this tournament anyway. Doesn’t matter for me if I won it before or not. I try to win each tournament that I play,” said Iga Swiatek after winning the mesmerizing match.
