Set against the complex tapestry of Hong Kong residents, Expats depicts a multifaceted group of women after a single encounter sets off a chain of life-altering events that leaves everyone navigating the intricate balance between blame and accountability.
“Expats” is a tumultuous tale set against the vibrant backdrop of Hong Kong. The series follows three American women – Margaret (Nicole Kidman), Hilary (Sarayu Blue), and Mercy (Ji-young Yoo) – whose fates intersect after an unexpected family tragedy. The narrative challenges class privileges and explores what happens when the line between victim and perpetrator blurs. Additionally, Brian Tee and Jack Huston will appear on screen, portraying the husbands of the two main characters, Margaret and Hillary.
Lulu Wang is the creator, director, and screenwriter of the “Expats” series. Wang, alongside Daniele Melia, serves as an executive producer of the series. Executive producers also include Nicole Kidman and Per Saari from Blossom Films (Rabbit Hole, Nine Perfect Strangers), as well as Australian screenwriter Alice Bell (The Beautiful Lie, The Slap). The list of producers also features Theresa Park from Per Capita Productions (After Yang, Bones and All) and Stan Wlodkowski (The Old Guard). Apart from Wang and Bell, the script for the series was crafted by Vera Miao (Two Sentence Horror Stories), Gursimran Sandhu (Game of Thrones), and novelist Janice Y.K. Lee.
The series will premiere on the Prime Video platform on January 26, 2024.
