James Cameron confirms the threequel is on track to be released in December of 2025.
The production of the movie Avatar: The Substance of Water (Avatar 2) took an incredibly long time. However, its immense Box Office success ($2.32 billion) is proof that “it was worth it.” It’s been known for a while that this rich sci-fi universe will get several more films, with the latest one slated to arrive in nearly two years.
James Cameron personally decided to reassure concerned fans, amid fears of further delays. During a recent press conference, this Hollywood visionary confirmed that Avatar 3 is on track for its theatrical release. The premiere is set for December 19, 2025.
Until recently, Avatar 3 was scheduled for December 2024, but those were details from literally several years ago. Disney updated its schedule and shifted this production “only” by a year. Unfortunately, the next two installments were handled a bit differently. Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 were initially set to debut in late 2026 and 2028. Now, we know that we’ll only see them by the end of 2029 and the end of 2031.
The reason behind the “swift” arrival of Avatar 3 is straightforward. The filming for this installment was done simultaneously with the second part (The Substance of Water). This means that only post-production work remains, which will likely take another year. James Cameron’s cosmic works require a significant amount of effort.
When the announcement came that Avatar 3 had wrapped filming, it was also revealed that the introductory scenes for Avatar 4 had been shot. Most likely, this will involve a narrative time jump, allowing the young cast (now a bit older) to soon join the filming of the final two parts of this saga. It’s worth noting that the success of the movie Avatar: The Substance of Water prompted Disney to greenlight the entire five-film series.
In the third installment, audiences can expect the “Dust People,” a Na’vi tribe inhabiting volcanic regions. Oona Chaplin will portray the leader of this new group, playing the character named Varang.
