Zac Efron is confirmed to star in Jody Hill’s next film, “Famous”, described as a “provocative Los Angeles-set thriller that explores the dark side of celebrity.”

In it, the High School Musical alum will play the dual roles of Hollywood heartthrob James Jansen and his overzealous fan Lance Dunkquist. Lance is an ordinary guy who bears striking resemblance to the A-lister and he’s about to make his way to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of stardom, at all cost.

The film is an adaptation of the acclaimed novel by bestselling author Blake Crouch. Scribe Chad Hodge, who also adapted Crouch’s Wayward Pines trilogy into a series, is writing the screenplay. This is Hill’s first feature film after the 2018 dramedy The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter and follows his success as a director-producer on the HBO crime comedy series The Righteous Gemstones.

The 37-year-old Efron will star alongside Phoebe Dynevor, who rose to fame in the Netflix period romantic drama Bridgerton

“Famous” is being produced by Sam Esmail and Chad Hamilton for Esmail Corp. and Michael Sagol for Caviar. Executive producers include Nick Krishnamurthy for Esmail Corp and Allison Hironaka for Caviar. A24 acquired its distribution right in North America, making this their second collaboration with Efron after the critically acclaimed boxing drama The Iron Claw last year.
