Wendy Williams came out swinging against her conservatorship guardian in an explosive appearance on The View. Returning to TV for the first time after her long hiatus, the former talk show host got candid about her highly publicized health issues and confinement.
The former Wendy Williams Show host left her post in 2021 due to her health condition. In 2022, she was placed in financial guardianship because her financial advisor claimed she wasn’t of “sound mind.” Her bank accounts were frozen and she then moved into an assisted living facility. Last year, her team finally disclosed that Williams had been diagnosed with aphasia and dementia.
“I didn’t mind it at that time at all because it’s about my money and keeping my money safe,” Williams added. “But at this point in my life, I want to terminate the guardianship and move on with my life if that’s possible at all.”
Pushing back on a judge’s declaration that she is “legally incapacitated after a diagnosis of frontal temporal dementia”, Williams claimed she received mental competency tests and “passed with flying colors.”
“I need them to get off my neck,” Williams said of her guardians. “These two people don’t look like me, talk like me, act like me…you know, get off my neck! I can’t do it with these two people.”
Thanks to her public plea for independence, the #FreeWendy movement is now gaining momentum. The situation calls to mind the #FreeBritney movement a few years back, when the pop star similarly demanded to be freed of her conservatorship.
