“UnPrisoned,” the compelling dramedy led by Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo, has received the green light for a second season across multiple streaming platforms. The show will return to Hulu in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America, and Disney+ in all other regions.
Kerry Washington, known for her acclaimed performances, has also extended her overall deal with ABC Signature, the studio behind “UnPrisoned.” The series debuted on Onyx Collective, marking the most-watched premiere for Hulu and the first dramedy for the brand.
“UnPrisoned,” inspired by Tracy McMillan’s life, revolves around Paige Alexander (portrayed by Washington), a relationship therapist, social media influencer, and single mother with a meticulous yet tumultuous life. Her world takes a surprising turn when her father, Edwin Alexander (played by Lindo), is released from prison and moves in with her and her teenage son.
Already gearing up with an active Season 2 writers’ room, the show is executive produced by Tracy McMillan, Yvette Lee Bowser, and Kerry Washington, in collaboration with Pilar Savone through their production company, Simpson Street. The talented team also includes Delroy Lindo, Joy Gorman Wettels, and Jen Braeden as executive producers.
As part of the new 3-year TV deal, Washington’s Simpson Street banner will produce various broadcast, cable, and streaming projects exclusively for ABC Signature, within Disney Television Studios.
Beyond “UnPrisoned,” Washington is actively involved in producing other projects. She executive produces the drama series “Reasonable Doubt” for Hulu, which she also directs and which is heading into its second season. Additionally, Simpson Street produced the critically acclaimed limited series “Little Fires Everywhere” for Hulu/ABC Signature, which received Emmy nominations in 2019.
Pilar Savone, an executive producer on various projects, remains Simpson Street’s EVP of production and development.
Tracy Underwood, EVP of Creative Affairs at ABC Signature, praised Kerry’s creativity and collaboration, emphasizing their pride in the recent series and award-winning productions. Underwood looks forward to continued success with Kerry and her team’s remarkable talent and creativity.
Simpson Street’s portfolio includes notable works such as HBO’s “Confirmation,” Netflix’s “American Son,” the Emmy-winning ABC special “Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” “The Fight,” and “Street You Grew Up On.”
On the big screen, Kerry Washington was recently featured in Netflix’s “The School for Good and Evil” and voiced a character in the Audible scripted podcast series “The Prophecy.” Upcoming projects she stars in and executive produces include “Shadow Force” and Tyler Perry’s WWII film “6888.”
Washington, who released her memoir “Thicker Than Water” in September 2023, earned a spot on the New York Times Bestseller list. She is represented by CAA, Washington Square Arts, The Lede Company, and Gretchen Rush.
