Tom Cruise is returning to the danger zone once again. Top Gun 3 is officially in the works, with Cruise set to reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a move confirmed during Paramount Pictures’ CinemaCon 2026 presentation in Las Vegas.
The announcement comes after years of speculation following the record-breaking success of 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed roughly $1.5 billion worldwide and became Cruise’s highest-grossing film. The sequel not only revived the decades-old franchise but also played a key role in drawing audiences back to theaters post-pandemic, setting a high bar for any follow-up.
At CinemaCon, Paramount confirmed that a script is currently in development, with longtime producer Jerry Bruckheimer returning to produce. The creative team, including writer Ehren Kruger, is also back in the mix as development progresses. No words yet whether director Joseph Kosinski is slated to return. While a director has yet to be officially announced, the project is being positioned as a priority title for the studio’s upcoming slate.
Details on the story remain under wraps, but the younger pilots introduced in Maverick, Rooster and Hangman – played by Miles Teller and Glen Powell, respectively – are widely expected to return. So far, no deals have been formally confirmed.
Cruise’s involvement remains the centerpiece. He will once again lead the film, continuing a character arc that has spanned nearly four decades since the original 1986 release.
Paramount has not announced an official release date, but early projections from industry sources place Top Gun 3 on a potential 2027–2028 timeline as the script and production plans take shape.
