Here’s a shocking bit of information: between 2019 and 2024, youth participation in baseball in America dropped 19%, which is the steepest decline of any major team sport.
And yet, despite this decline, participation in tournaments at Cooperstown is still high. More than 1,400 teams still make the trip annually, all to our one little town in New York.
Part of the reason is that, for those players who are still playing baseball, the intensity of passion is even higher on average, with more families looking for serious tournaments to take their young players to.
But, there’s a lot about Cooperstown Dreams Park that gets lost in the brochure and random google searching. So, let’s take a closer look at what Cooperstown is all about.
The Village Is Smaller Than You Think
Cooperstown Dreams Park sits right by the village, minutes from the heart of town. Cooperstown itself is a bit smaller than you might expect, at only 2,000 permanent residents. Its main draw is baseball, and for that it brings close to 300,000 visitors a year, making it a busy place during the summers.
But, with that kind of fluctuation, you can guess that booking accommodations can be tricky, and parking is tight. That’s why it’s important to look into lodgings as soon as possible, when you are planning a trip.
However, there is a great upside to the village. It’s all about baseball. The quaint streets are well-kept, beautiful, and have plenty of eateries and baseball shops. It’s a great place to check out memorabilia from America’s greatest game, and maybe even pick up some cards or pins. There’s also the Cooperstown NY baseball hall of fame in town, which can make for a fun extra to any trip.
What About the Costs of a Trip?
Youth sports are getting pretty expensive. The average American family spent $1,016 on their child’s primary sport in 2024, which is up a whopping 46% since 2019, according to the Aspen Institute’s parent survey.
So, that’s important to consider when looking at the costs of coming for a week at Cooperstown. Yes, it’s an investment, but it can also be family vacation of sorts, and a once in a lifetime experience. Travel, lodging, and meals together make up the bulk of costs for the trip. But consider it like planning a summer vacation, not just any old weekend tournament.
Cooperstown Dreams Park
Cooperstown Dreams Park opened its fields in 1996 with one big idea behind it. Every kid in America should get at least one chance to play baseball as if they were in the big leagues. Nearly three decades later, it’s the original youth tournament destination of Cooperstown NY and still going strong, even as others have appeared, like the Cooperstown all star village vs dreams park.
The facility runs 22 professionally maintained real grass fields, each with stadium seating, electronic scoreboards, and broadcast capability. Across 14 to 15 weeks each summer, 104 teams arrive per week from every state, and in some years, from abroad.
The format balances competition with development. Pool play runs first, lower stakes, more room to learn. Then single-elimination playoffs raise the temperature. Every team is guaranteed at least six games during the Cooperstown 12U baseball tournament, weather permitting, no matter their record. A team can lose early and still have baseball left, which is how you want a twelve-year-old’s capstone big tournament to work.

Lodging for the Players, Coaches, and Parents
It can be a bit confusing for people first planning their trip to Cooperstown Dreams Park.
The simple version is:
- Coaches and players lodge in the clubhouses on site, sleepover summer camp style.
- Parents and accompanying family members must find their own lodging in the surrounding area.
But, don’t worry, for the kids and coaches, the clubhouses are air conditioned and have shared meals, downtime together, and a great spirit of camaraderie.
For the parents, there’s accommodations available in and around Cooperstown proper and the surrounding area. Since Dreams Park sits right by Cooperstown, with more options the further out you’re willing to drive, there’s a wide range to choose from. But, the earlier you book, the better your options will be.
The Best Tradition All Week
Ask anyone who’s been, and you’ll know that the ‘real’ sport of Cooperstown is pin trading. Teams design custom pins before they arrive, stamped with their logo, hometown, and tournament year. Once the week starts, these pins are one of the best ways to connect with other teams and have fun while doing it.
Kids who’d never otherwise speak end up swapping pins and stories across state lines. You need a lot of them, as each kid will be trading for at least one of each other team’s custom pin. Pack more than you think you’ll need, and bring a lanyard or towel to display them. The pins the young athletes trade for are souvenirs they can keep long after the games themselves are finished.
What to Actually Pack
- Rain gear and layers. Central New York summers can bring strong afternoon thunderstorms and big temperature swings. Highs in the 80s, lows in the 50s, pack accordingly.
- A cooler with water. While there are concessions on-site, it’s always a good plan to stock up and bring refreshments.
- Lawn chairs and a pop-up canopy. There’s spectator seating, but shade and a portable chair are lifesavers on a hot and sunny day.
- Extra team gear and equipment. Bring backups where you can, and plan for everything. Thankfully, other teams may be able to spot you in the worst case.
- Your pin collection and custom team pins. An absolute must for the Cooperstown Dreams Park experience.
Getting There
Cooperstown sits in central New York, roughly four hours from New York City, four from Philadelphia, five from Boston, and an hour and a half from Albany. Most teams drive, and a vehicle on-site is a lifesaver, as it helps immensely with the back-and-forth between the ballpark and the village.
If you are flying, you’ll usually be coming in by Albany International Airport, with a rental car to cross the last bit of distance.
The tournaments themselves fill 6 to 12 months in advance. The popular weeks during the summer tend to fill up first and fast. If there’s a specific week you’re looking for, it’s important to register sooner rather than later.
So, Is It Worth It?
Six guaranteed games, a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and a full week in the beautiful baseball village and the lakeside scenery around it is almost guaranteed to be a wonderful family trip.
Not only do the players enjoy the games, but the rivalries, friendships, and memories of the clubhouse with their team, playing in the big stadiums, and visits to the baseball loving village will all leave an impact they won’t forget.
If your team’s ready for the real thing, the baseball registration forms for next summer’s tournaments are open now. Claim your week, and start planning the trip the rest of them will be talking about for years.
