Sixteen years after The Social Network dissected the rise of Facebook, Aaron Sorkin is returning to the world of Mark Zuckerberg — this time to examine the fallout. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for The Social Reckoning, offering a tense preview of a film that shifts focus from Silicon Valley ambition to the controversies that transformed Facebook into one of the world’s most scrutinized companies. Written and directed by Sorkin, the film is described as a companion piece to David Fincher’s Oscar-winning 2010 drama rather than a direct sequel. Inspired by The Facebook Files, the Wall Street Journal investigation into Facebook’s internal practices, The Social Reckoning follows whistleblower Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, as she works with journalist Jeff Horwitz, portrayed by Jeremy Allen White, to expose documents detailing the platform’s impact on teen mental health, misinformation and political discourse.
The trailer introduces Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg, replacing Jesse Eisenberg, whose performance in the original film earned an Academy Award nomination. Eisenberg ultimately declined to return, later explaining that he no longer wanted to be closely associated with the Meta founder. Sorkin has said he spent days attempting to persuade the actor before casting Strong in the role.
Equally notable is the absence of Fincher, whose direction helped make The Social Network one of the defining films of the 21st century. While Sorkin penned the original screenplay, he has now stepped behind the camera himself, taking over directing duties for the new project.
Alongside Strong, Madison and White, the ensemble includes Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin and Billy Magnussen. The film hits theaters October 9, 2026.
