“The Princess Bride” and “When Harry Met Sally” Director Rob Reiner and His Wife Murdered At Their Home

And it gets even worse: the couple’s son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner has been arrested as the sole suspect for their murders. Nick, who has been battling drug addiction and checked into rehabs multiple times since his teenage years, allegedly slit his parents’ throats at their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles. Rob was 78, while his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was 68. 

On Sunday, the quiet upscale neighborhood was rocked by the discovery of two bodies – later identified as Rob and Michele. It was their youngest daughter, Romy, who found them. She immediately told police of her suspicion that it was her brother Nick who perpetrated the murders. 6 hours after the bodies were found, the cops finally apprehended Nick while he was wandering near the University of South California (USC). He is currently in police custody without bail. 

Later, more details emerge from this gruesome tragedy. According to sources close to the couple, Rob and Nick had an explosive argument the night before during Conan O’ Brien’s Christmas party. According to people present at the occasion, Nick showed up in a hoodie to the black-tie event and was behaving erratically, which led to Rob and Michele leaving the premise early. These sources also told media that the couple had confided they were “at wit’s end” on how to deal with Nick’s drug addiction and mental illness. Nick’s struggle was depicted in the 2015 semi-autobiographical movie “Being Charlie” – directed by Rob and co-written by Nick himself. 

Rob, the son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, first made a name in Hollywood playing Meathead in the 1970s sitcom “All In The Family”. While he continued acting consistently, it was his directorial and producing ventures that shot him to the top of Hollywood. His directing credits include seminal mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap”, fantasy comedy “The Princess Bride”, romcom classic “When Harry Met Sally”, and the Oscar-nominated legal drama “A Few Good Men”. Through his banner Castle Rock Entertainment, Rob produced some of the most revered films in cinema including “Shawshank Redemption”, the “Before” trilogy, and “The Green Mile”. 

Previously married to director Penny Marshall, he met Michele, a photographer, while shooting “When Harry Met Sally”. The couple tied the knot in 1989 and had three kids: Jake, Nick, and Romy. The family made frequent appearances on the red carpets together and had candidly spoken about Nick’s addiction several times in the past. But nobody could have foreseen this brutal ending – per their latest statement, Los Angeles police has declared Nick “responsible” for the deaths of his parents. The case is now being turned over to the LA District Attorney’s Office.
