The Odyssey Continues to Top Box Office Worldwide, Extends Christopher Nolan’s Godly Streak

Christopher Nolan has another blockbuster on his hands. One week after its theatrical debut, The Odyssey has sailed past $346 million at the global box office, including nearly $200 million domestically, giving the Oscar-winning filmmaker the biggest opening stretch of his career. The mythological epic has already surpassed the first-week pace of Oppenheimer and delivered the strongest opening of any Nolan film, continuing a remarkable run that began with The Dark Knight trilogy nearly two decades ago.

Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, the film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca who embarks on a perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces mythical creatures, divine intervention and impossible trials as his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, waits for his return. The ensemble also features Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal and Benny Safdie.

The early box office performance has strengthened The Odyssey‘s position among 2026’s biggest theatrical events. The film delivered the best Monday gross of the year in North America and now ranks among the highest-grossing releases of 2026 after only a week in theaters. Premium formats have fueled much of that success, with IMAX and other large-format screens accounting for a substantial share of ticket sales. Analysts also note that the opening outpaced Oppenheimer despite the latter’s eventual march to nearly $1 billion worldwide.

The momentum may continue as the film continues its worldwide voyage. The Odyssey has yet to open in several international territories, including Japan and parts of Asia, where Nolan’s previous films have enjoyed strong theatrical business. The markets could provide another boost for the filmmaker’s ambitious retelling of Homer’s classic, on its way to becoming one of this year’s most lucrative releases.
