The O’Connells are back, and they have brought several familiar faces with them. Universal’s fourth “Mummy” movie has begun filming with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell, alongside several veterans from the original franchise. The production marks the first reunion of Fraser and Weisz in the roles since 2001’s “The Mummy Returns.”

Fraser confirmed that he was returning to work on the movie during the Deauville American Film Festival. “I have to be at work on Monday morning,” he told Canal+, confirming that cameras would begin rolling September 7. He also described stepping back into the role of Rick after more than two decades as “reconnecting with an old friend.”

The reunion extends beyond its two leads. John Hannah is returning as Evelyn’s brother Jonathan Carnahan, while Kevin J. O’Connor will reprise Beni Gabor. Oded Fehr is also back as Medjai warrior Ardeth Bay. Arnold Vosloo is expected to return as Imhotep, though his deal was still being finalized in August. Michael Johnston and Numan Acar have joined the cast in new roles.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking team behind “Ready or Not” and “Abigail,” direct from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. The filmmakers have described the project as a script they believed Fraser and Weisz would only accept if they genuinely connected with the material.

Story details remain under wraps, though the sequel will follow the events of “The Mummy Returns” and bypass 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” which drew a mixed critical response and replaced Weisz with Maria Bello as Evelyn. The approach gives Fraser and Weisz’s characters a direct continuation from their earlier adventures.

Universal has scheduled “The Mummy 4” for a theatrical release on October 15, 2027, giving Rick and Evelyn another supernatural adventure more than 25 years after their last journey together.
