Universal Pictures has confirmed that The Mummy 4 will bow in theaters on May 19, 2028, reuniting original stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for the long-awaited continuation of the beloved adventure franchise. The announcement officially takes the series back to the much beloved cinematic world introduced in the 1999 hit The Mummy and its 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns.
Fraser and Weisz will reprise their iconic roles as adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell. The pair’s chemistry anchored the early entries in the franchise and helped define its blend of action, romance and supernatural spectacle. Weisz was absent from the 2008 follow-up The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, making her return for The Mummy 4 a highlight for fans of the original films. The directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence are attached to helm the project from a script by David Coggeshall, with franchise veteran Sean Daniel producing.
Universal’s announcement positions the film as a direct continuation of the O’Connells’ saga rather than a reboot. The studio previously took the modern reboot route starring Tom Cruise in 2017, meant to kickstart Universal’s own cinematic universe of monster movies called The Dark Universe. The plan fell through when the film bombed critically and commercially – sending Universal scurrying back to the original playbook.
Plot details have been kept under wraps – its co-director merely promises it would be “beautiful and scary” – with the studio’s promotional materials spotlighting the return of Fraser and Weisz to the franchise that catapulted them to fame. Both actors have since won Oscars — Fraser for The Whale and Weisz for The Constant Gardener — and their pairing in this new installment underscores the studio’s commitment to honoring the series’ roots.
The Mummy 4 is currently in pre-production, with filming set to begin sometime in 2026.
