The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum Announces Main Cast with Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, and Sir Ian McKellen Returning

Warner Bros. has unveiled the first official cast for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, with a mix of returning franchise players and new additions set to expand Middle-earth’s cinematic legacy. As the title suggests, the film will center around Gollum – with Andy Serkis reprising his role while also directing the project.
The announcement confirms the return of original trilogy stars Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo, alongside Lee Pace returning as Thranduil — a lineup that ties the new installment directly to The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
New faces joining the franchise include Jamie Dornan, who takes on the role of Aragorn (introduced here as Strider), Leo Woodall as Harvald and Academy Award winner Kate Winslet as Marigol, a woman with ties to Gollum’s past. The recasting of Aragorn reflects the story’s earlier timeline, set years before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring.
Plot details remain tightly guarded, but the film is expected to explore a long-referenced storyline from J.R.R. Tolkien’s lore: the search for Gollum before he can reveal crucial information about the One Ring to Sauron. It came from a brief portion of the Tolkien novel, Shadows of the Past – in which Gandalf recounted Gollum’s backstory to Frodo. The narrative unfolds in the years between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on Aragorn’s mission to track the elusive creature across Middle-earth.
The project is being produced by original trilogy architects including Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, further anchoring the film in the creative DNA of the Oscar-winning franchise. The Lord of the Rings:
