Taylor Swift Releases Old Hollywood-Style “Elizabeth Taylor” Music Video

Taylor Swift is taking a reverent turn toward classic cinema with the release of her latest music video, “Elizabeth Taylor” – the third single from “The Life of a Showgirl” album – with a visual built entirely around the legacy of the late screen legend. The video premiered March 31 exclusively on Spotify and Apple Music – continuing the Grammy winner’s recent rollout strategy that began with “Opalite” last month.

Forgoing a traditional on-screen appearance from Swift, the music video leans fully into archival footage of Elizabeth Taylor, weaving together scenes from her film career alongside candid moments that defined her public persona. Clips from titles such as Cleopatra and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? are intercut with red carpet appearances and intimate off-camera glimpses, creating a portrait of both the icon and the woman behind the image.

The song itself, a sweeping orchestral pop ballad, reflects on fame, romance and the cost of living in the public eye. Swift draws parallels between her own experience and the late screen icon’s, referencing highly scrutinized relationships and the pressure of maintaining a persona under constant attention. The lyrics position Taylor as both inspiration and cautionary figure, exploring how celebrity can blur the line between personal truth and public narrative.

The inclusion of original film clips gives the video a documentary-like texture, with editing that moves between glamour and vulnerability. The production worked with Elizabeth Taylor’s estate to secure usage rights for the footage, ensuring the project remained an authorized tribute. As with her string of recent projects, Swift directed the project by herself.
