In July, boy band *NSYNC’s 2000 hit “Bye Bye Bye” enjoyed a renaissance thanks to its inclusion in Marvel’s superhero tentpole “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The song’s signature marionette dance, which appears on a key scene in the film, quickly trended on social media and became a massive viral hit. Now, the iconic song gets a well-deserved tribute at the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary.
Part of a series of tributes to the show’s 50-year history of musical performers, K-Pop boyband Stray Kids performs a mash-up of “Bye Bye Bye” with their own recent hit “Chk Chk Boom.” *NSYNC member Lance Bass was on hand to introduce the tribute performance alongside fellow early aughts boyband sensation Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean.
The 8-member boyband’s rendition of the Y2K hit includes the famous strings attached dance sequence from the OG music video. Bass himself co-signed his blessing on Instagram saying, “Such an honor to be a part of the @amas 50th anniversary special and witness @realstraykids absolutely crush their tribute. 🙌 Y’all killed those ‘Bye Bye Bye’ moves. Thanks for keeping the boy band magic alive! #AMAs50”
“Bye Bye Bye”’s resurgence of popularity is nothing short of miraculous. Upon the global release of “Deadpool & Wolverine”, the song shot up to #45 at the Billboard Hot 100 chart – 24 years after it peaked at #4 in the same chart. So huge was the “Deadpool & Wolverine” impact on the song that its music video’s title was changed to include the words “(Official Video from Deadpool and Wolverine).”
