‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Swings to Historic Box Office Debut With Almost $1 Billion Worldwide
Opening to a staggering $932 million worldwide, including $360 million in North America, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has crawled to a historic level – giving Sony and Marvel Studios the second-biggest global opening weekend in box office history behind only Avengers: Endgame. The debut also stands as the largest launch ever in the US and gave married stars Tom Holland and Zendaya back-to-back blockbuster hits after The Odyssey earlier this summer.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the fourth solo outing follows Peter Parker after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Doctor Strange’s spell erased the world’s memory of his identity. Forced to rebuild his life from scratch, Peter patrols New York anonymously while confronting a dangerous new threat and an unexpected change to his powers. Holland returns alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo and Sadie Sink. The film has also earned strong reviews, with critics praising its more grounded approach to the character.
The latest installment builds on a franchise that has consistently raised the bar. Spider-Man: Homecoming finished with $880 million worldwide, Far From Home climbed to $1.13 billion, and No Way Home became a global phenomenon with $1.95 billion, the highest-grossing Spider-Man film ever. Brand New Day has already outpaced No Way Home‘s opening frame and now ranks behind only Avengers: Endgame for the biggest worldwide debut in history. It also achieved the feat without IMAX screens in many markets, where Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continued its premium-format run.
The record-breaking start also strengthens confidence in Spider-Man’s future on the big screen. Producer Amy Pascal has previously said the current film launches a new trilogy centered on Holland’s Peter Parker, while Marvel Studios and Sony have both expressed their intention to continue the partnership beyond Brand New Day. Although a fifth film has yet to receive an official announcement, the creative teams have made it clear that Peter Parker’s story is far from over.
