King of Clay Rafael Nadal formally bid goodbye to tennis at the event that propelled his career: the French Open. On Sunday, the Spaniard was honored at Roland Garros in an emotionally-charged farewell. Throughout his illustrious career, the Spaniard won a record 14 titles at the clay-court grand slam.
The 38-year-old, who announced his retirement last year, received a special ceremony at the start of this year’s tournament. The event drew thousands of fans who wore custom red tops with the message “Merci Rafa” written on them and gave him a standing ovation as he stepped onto Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The highlights of the event include the airing of a montage featuring Nadal’s legendary run at the tournament and the arrivals of fellow tennis giants Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray to support their colleague.
“This is tough,” the visibly emotional Nadal addressed the court. “I don’t know where to start after playing on this court for the past 20 years. Winning, losing, but especially being moved every time I’ve had the chance to be here.”
“I can no longer play in front of you anymore, but my heart and my memories will always be linked to this magical place,” he concluded.
The near 50-minute ceremony ended with Nadal being presented with a plaque of his footprint, before his son joined him at the court as he waved to adoring fans one last time.
