Three of the hottest Hollywood A-list right now are set to lend their star powers to Materialists, an upcoming romantic comedy by Celine Song, director of the critically acclaimed Past Lives. It’s been a while since we got a decent romcom on the big screen, so Materialists’s lavish Manhattan-set visuals, cool premise and gorgeous cast are such a welcome treat.
Materialists follows a matchmaker (Johnson) who is an expert in finding love for elite clients in New York City. Soon, she herself is caught in a whirlwind romance with a dashing bachelor (Pascal) with such perfect credentials. But a chance encounter with an ex (Evans) forces her to rethink her whole philosophy on love.
Set to Madonna’s Material Girls, the trailer exudes an atmospheric vibe in line with Song’s aesthetic. It highlights the high life of New York that Johnson’s character relishes in, before delving into more emotional stuff in the second half.
The film is written and directed by Song, who earned an Oscar nomination in 2024 for her Past Lives’ script. The film is co-produced by 2AM and Killer Films. A24 will serve as the film’s domestic US distributor while Sony is handling its international rollout. The film will hit theaters in June 2025.
