If you’re a big fan of the horror genre, you’ve surely heard of Jason Voorhees and the legal battle over his name in recent years.
The legal battle surrounding the franchise’s most famous character is essentially a copyright dispute between Victor Miller, the screenwriter of the original 1980 film, and director/producer Sean S. Cunningham.
The most recent Friday the 13th movie was the 2009 reboot, directed by Marcus Nispel. In addition, the franchise spawned a video game developed by IllFonic and published by Gun Media. The game was officially released in 2017 and discontinued in 2024.
After years of Voorhees inactivity, the parties began to find ways to profit separately or through limited partnerships. The “Jason Universe” brand was recently released, with a focus on licensing the character for games (such as MultiVersus and Fortnite), events, and merchandise, which has really excited fans of the iconic slasher.
The most famous surname is also returning to television screens this year! “Crystal Lake,” a series starring Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, will premiere on Peacock on October 15. The series explores Pamela Voorhees’ life before the events of the first “Friday the 13th” film.
