The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled nominees for the 98th Academy Awards, with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners setting a new high-water mark in Oscars history. The supernatural epic earned 16 nominations, the most ever recorded, surpassing the previous 14-nomination tallies held by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016). Sinners received nods in major categories including Best Picture, Best Director for Coogler and a Best Actor nomination for Michael B. Jordan.

The announcement on January 22, 2026 brought surprises and first-time nominees alongside established names. In the acting categories, Elle Fanning received her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Sentimental Value, and veteran actor Delroy Lindo, also a first-time nominee, secured a Best Supporting Actor nod for his work in Sinners. Another unexpected highlight was Kate Hudson’s inclusion in the Best Actress field for her performance in Song Sung Blue. Fans and pundits alike noted these names as among the most exciting breakthrough nominations of the year.

The Best Picture category features a diverse set of ten films, blending studio fare with international and independent voices. Alongside Sinners are: Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, and Train Dreams. The inclusion of F1 in Best Picture drew attention as a notable genre and box-office entry amid more traditional award contenders.

Other acting nominees include Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Jessie Buckley for Hamnet and Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. Behind the camera, Best Director nominations were awarded to Chloé Zhao (Hamnet), Josh Safdie (Marty Supreme), Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another), Joachim Trier (Sentimental Value) and Coogler (Sinners).

In supporting categories, Sentimental Value earned multiple nods including two for Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, while Teyana Taylor was recognized for One Battle After Another. Delroy Lindo’s first nomination at age 73 was widely celebrated in awards coverage.
