Netflix’s hit Korean sensation “Squid Game” concluded its run last week with its third season. And one cameo at the tail end of the finale is setting the internet abuzz.
(Spoiler alert!)
After all that went down in the six-episode final season, Front Man Hwang In Ho (Lee Byung Hun) escaped the blown up island where the Game is held and flew to Los Angeles to give the deceased Seong Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae)’s prize money to his daughter. On his way back, he encountered another recruiter playing ddakji with a potential contestant in an alleyway. The recruiter is played by none other than two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett herself.
The heavyweight cameo immediately sent fans into a frenzy. Nobody saw her presence coming. With two Oscars and even more nominations under her belt, the actress is one of the most respected actors in Hollywood. If anything, her appearance indicates Netflix’s ambitious plan for the future of Squid Game.
For a while, it has been confirmed that Netflix is expanding the Squid Game universe globally, with an English-language version by Oscar-nominated filmmaker David Fincher in the works. Blanchett’s cameo might be setting up that spinoff, showing that the twisted Game is never limited to the borders of Korea. Don’t be surprised if Squid Game Mexico, Japan, France, Spain and so on pop up in the future.
