Olivia Rodrigo Kicks Off Third Album Era With New Single, “Drop Dead”

247views

Olivia Rodrigo has launched the next chapter of her pop career with “Drop Dead.” Released on April 17, “Drop Dead” serves as the first single of Rodrigo’s third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.

The song finds the Grammy winner pivoting toward a brighter, infatuation-driven sound. The track trades the heartbreak edge of earlier hits for a dizzy, romantic tone, capturing the rush of obsession, daydreaming and early-stage love.

The accompanying video, directed by Petra Collins and filmed at the Palace of Versailles, leans into that fantasy. Rodrigo wanders the historic estate in a pastel-hued haze, blending whimsical imagery with references embedded in the lyrics, suspected to be a nod to a past romance.

As with much of Rodrigo’s catalog, fan speculation quickly turned toward her personal life — particularly her past relationship with Louis Partridge. The pair dated for roughly two years before reportedly splitting in late 2025, and listeners have pointed to lyrical clues, including the Pisces and Gemini (Olivia and Louis’ zodiacs) mention and the constant reference to the Versailles (which was built by King Louis) as possible nods to the actor. While Rodrigo has not confirmed any specific muse, she has described the album broadly as a collection of “sad love songs”.

“Drop Dead” continues Rodrigo’s close collaboration with producer Dan Nigro and arrives as her first major release since 2023’s Guts. Rodrigo’s forthcoming album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, is scheduled for release on June 12, 2026.
