Noah Centineo is reportedly in negotiations to star opposite Sydney Sweeney in Legendary Pictures’ upcoming live-action adaptation of the classic anime Gundam. While nothing is official yet, the casting news marks a major development in the long-gestating project.
Sweeney, known for her breakout roles in “Euphoria” and “Anyone But You”, is already in final talks to lead the project, which will be written and directed by Jim Mickle, creator of Netflix’s “Sweet Tooth”. According to sources, Sweeney and her potential co-star (Centineo) may play characters on opposite sides of an interplanetary war — a dynamic that’s reportedly reminiscent of Romeo & Juliet.
Centineo, who rose to fame in Netflix’s hit romance “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”, has since moved into action fare — he recently starred as Atom Smasher in “Black Adam” and is attached to Legendary’s “Street Fighter” adaptation as Ken Masters.
The live-action “Gundam” film is being co-developed by Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks. According to reports, the movie is not bound for Netflix as originally planned, but will instead receive a theatrical release.
Gundam is a long-running Japanese mecha franchise that began in 1979 with the anime Mobile Suit Gundam. Set in a future where space colonies war against Earth, the story centers on giant robotic machines called mobile suits, piloted in epic battles. The series has become a cornerstone of sci-fi culture, spawning dozens of anime series, films, manga, and model kits loved by generations of fans.
