The Vampire Diaries alum Nina Dobrev just said “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé” to longtime partner Shaun White. The Instagram caption accompanies a carousel of pictures from the night the Olympic gold medalist proposed to Dobrev at the Golden Swan, an upscale restaurant in New York City. In it, the two are locked in an embrace against the backdrop of a lovely white rose arch decor. In a separate Instagram post, White also announced the happy news, captioning it: “she said YES.”
Speaking to Vogue, Dobrev shared the story of how her now-fiancé proposed. White originally planned to propose in the summer, but the plan got derailed after Dobrev suffered an injury in a dirt bike accident. He wanted to move the plan to their upcoming Cape Town trip instead, but the actress got suspicious. In the end, White chose an inconspicuous day and planned a meticulous ploy to get Dobrev to the Golden Swan.
To alleviate Dobrev’s suspicion, the snowboarder asked her publicist to send a fake invitation to a Vogue dinner with Anna Wintour.
“He made the invite look so legitimate,” recalled Dobrev with a laugh. He further made sure it looked legit by organizing a styling session with celebrity stylist Kate Young. So imagine her surprise when she walked into the restaurant’s VIP room and found her beau waiting for her.
“I went into shock. I just froze and stared at him,” she said.
According to her, White “said all the right things” before popping the question with a 5-carat Lorraine Schwartz ring. The newly engaged couple ended the night by ordering Shake Shack and dumplings to the Golden Swan.
Dobrev and White started dating in 2019. They went public on Instagram in May 2020 and spent lockdown together.
