More screams — and laughs — will soon echo through Monstropolis.

Pixar is developing Monsters, Inc. 3, the latest chapter in the beloved animated franchise, according to a recent Wall Street Journal profile of Pixar chief Pete Docter. The project expands the world first introduced in the 2001 hit Monsters, Inc., which followed best friends James P. “Sulley” Sullivan and Mike Wazowski as they powered their city by collecting children’s screams — before discovering laughter was an even stronger energy source.

The original film, voiced by John Goodman and Billy Crystal, grossed more than $500 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “If I Didn’t Have You.” The universe later expanded with the 2013 prequel Monsters University and the Disney+ series Monsters at Work, which explored life in Monstropolis after the company’s shift from screams to laughter.

Details for Monsters, Inc. 3 remain under wraps, including its story, director and whether Goodman and Crystal will reprise their roles. The project is described as being in early development.

The announcement came as Pixar outlined several follow-up films built around its biggest properties. Among the projects discussed were The Incredibles 3 and Coco 2, both sequels to past Oscar-winning hits. Not just sequels — in the same profile, Docter also unveiled plan for an original film titled Ono Ghost Market, inspired by Asian myth about supernatural bazaars.
