She rose to prominence portraying Patsey in the critically-acclaimed historical drama “12 Years a Slave.” Lupita was awarded an Academy Award (Oscar) as the Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Patsey. She debuted on Broadway in 2015 playing in the successful play “Eclipsed.” She also starred in “The Jungle Book” and “Black Panther.” Lupita strongly advocates the rights of women and animals.

She rose to fame playing the role of Isabelle Lightwood in the fantasy series “Shadowhunters.” She also starred in such Latin productions as “Cosita linda” and “Voltea pa’ que te enamores.” In 2009 she appeared in “Model Latina,” where she finished in fifth place. She contributes to a non-profit organisation Get Schooled which targets popular culture to improve high school graduation rates. Emeraude is currently dating musician Prince Royce.
