Madison Keys Defeats World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to Win Her First Grand Slam Title

The Australian Open 2025 women’s final saw the emergence of a new Grand Slam winner as American Madison Keys defeated Belarusia’s Aryna Sabalenka – a two-time defending champion – 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. The win marks the No. 19 player’s first-ever Grand Slam title.

Keys’ journey to this milestone did not come easy. At 29, she is seen by many as “too old” to crack the rank of elite Grand Slam titleholders. Having debuted at 14 with prodigious potential, injuries plagued Keys’ pro career, at one point pushing her off of the world top 50 players. 2022 saw Keys’ resurgence when she reached the semifinal of Australian Open against Sabalenka. She ended up losing to the No. 1 player, who went on to win the tournament. 3 years later, the roles are reversed.

“I have wanted this for so long and I have been in one other Grand Slam final. It did not go my way and I didn’t know if I was ever going to be able to get back to this position to try to win a trophy again,” Keys told reporters in an emotional interview after the winning match.

She continued, “Last year was so tough with some really bad injuries and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do it again and to be here and to have this trophy and to also be able to do it with my husband (Bjorn Fratangelo, also her coach) who is kind of dazed and confused over there, I love you all so much and I cannot wait for more.”

Keys reached the final after an impressive run past higher ranked players like Elena Rybakina, Danielle Collins and world No. 2 Iga Świątek. With that feat, she became the first woman since Serena Williams in 2005 to defeat the world No. 1 and No. 2 at the Australian Open.
