Netflix is sending Lindsay Lohan back to the romantic-comedy territory that helped make her a household name. The actress will star opposite “Crazy Rich Asians” heartthrob Henry Golding in “Return to You,” a new Netflix romance that reunites her with “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday” director Mark Waters more than two decades after their previous collaborations.

Set in 2008, “Return to You” follows a powerful but lonely attorney who accidentally receives a deeply personal DVD addressed to the husband of a dying woman. The lawyer uses clues from the disc to track down the intended recipient, setting her on a journey that develops into an unexpected romance with the grieving widower.

Eric Champnella wrote the screenplay, while Brad Krevoy and Lohan will produce. Olivia Krevoy, Jimmy Townsend and Galen Fletcher serve as executive producers. Waters directs the film after previously working with Lohan on “Freaky Friday” in 2003 and “Mean Girls” in 2004. Waters has also directed Netflix romances including “He’s All That,” “Mother of the Bride” and “La Dolce Villa.”

The project adds another title to Lohan’s recent career resurgence with Netflix. She returned to leading roles with 2022’s “Falling for Christmas,” followed by “Irish Wish” and “Our Little Secret.” More recently, she reunited with Jamie Lee Curtis in “Freakier Friday,” the sequel to their 2003 Disney comedy. Lohan is also attached to Hulu’s upcoming thriller series “Count My Lies” and is developing a biopic about Hollywood star Ann-Margret.

“Return to You” began production in Toronto in late September. Netflix has yet to announce an official release date, though the movie is currently expected to arrive on the streaming service in 2027.
