Ten years after Mia and Sebastian danced beneath the Los Angeles skyline, La La Land is headed back to theaters. Lionsgate has announced a special 10th anniversary re-release beginning Aug. 16, with the Oscar-winning musical receiving its first-ever presentation in Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos at Dolby Cinema locations. The event invites audiences to revisit Damien Chazelle’s celebrated romance in a format designed to showcase Justin Hurwitz’s Academy Award-winning score and the film’s vibrant cinematography.
Released in 2016, La La Land stars Emma Stone as aspiring actress Mia Dolan and Ryan Gosling as jazz pianist Sebastian Wilder. Their romance unfolds against the backdrop of Hollywood, where each pursues an ambitious career while confronting the sacrifices that often accompany success. Chazelle wrote and directed the film, which features original songs by Hurwitz, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, including the Oscar-winning “City of Stars.” The cast also includes John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, Sonoya Mizuno and J.K. Simmons.
The musical became a critical and commercial sensation upon its release. It earned more than $470 million worldwide and collected 14 Academy Award nominations, tying the record set by Titanic and All About Eve. It ultimately won six Oscars, including Best Director for Chazelle, Best Actress for Stone, Best Original Score and Best Original Song. The film also remains forever linked to the unforgettable envelope mix-up at the 2017 Academy Awards, when it was mistakenly announced as Best Picture before Moonlight was revealed as the actual winner.
The anniversary celebration extends well beyond the theatrical re-release. Lionsgate kicked off the campaign with a special event at Los Angeles’ Griffith Observatory, where the studio unveiled a refreshed poster that fixes Ryan Gosling’s famously “flat hand” pose, a detail the actor has joked about for years. A live-to-film concert at the Greek Theatre follows on Aug. 1, with Justin Hurwitz’s score performed by a full orchestra and jazz ensemble. The restored Dolby Cinema edition then opens in North America on Aug. 16 before expanding to additional international territories in the weeks ahead, giving audiences around the world another chance to experience La La Land on the big screen a decade after it first captivated moviegoers.
