“KPop Demon Hunters” Slays Atop US Box Office AND Billboard Hot 100

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation’s “KPop Demon Hunters” proves to be the undisputed pop culture phenomenon of the year with its latest achievements. This week, the film managed to top the US box office with limited two-day screenings while simultaneously delivering a chart-topping single on the Billboard Hot 100.

The film launched with a commanding $18 million domestic opening weekend, besting last week’s champion, Warner Bros’ “Weapons”, and Disney’s Lindsay Lohan sequel “Freakier Friday”.

Equally noteworthy is the performance of its soundtrack, which keeps going up, up, up the Billboard Hot 100 with every passing week. “Golden” – the film’s infectious ballad anthem – returned to No. 1 on the chart, marking its second week at the top. Powered by viral TikTok videos and the singalong version’s cinema release, three more songs from the soundtrack surge on the Top 10: “Your Idol” at no. 4, “Soda Pop” at no. 5, and “How It’s Done” at no. 10.

On Netflix, the film also carved out a historic feat as the streamer’s most watched original film of all time, besting the 2021 Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson-starrer “Red Notice”. And with an impressively slow drop week after week, the film isn’t close to done with their record takedowns.

With the mega success of “KPop Demon Hunters”, it’s little wonder that the studio and Netflix are now in talks to produce a sequel to continue Huntrix’s story.
