The demon-slaying K-pop idols of Huntr/X are heading back into battle. Netflix has officially greenlit a sequel to the animated musical phenomenon “KPop Demon Hunters,” which will reunite directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. The duo will return to write and direct the new installment as part of a multi-project deal with Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation.

The original film blended supernatural action with pop-music spectacle, following fictional K-pop trio Huntr/X — Rumi, Mira and Zoey — who balance their lives as global pop stars with secret missions protecting fans from demonic threats. Their biggest adversaries include the Saja Boys, a rival boy band secretly composed of demons.

In a statement after confirming the sequel, Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria heaped praise on the film’s massive cultural appeal.

“With ‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres,” said Bajaria. “We’re incredibly proud to deepen our partnership with them and, together with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation, build this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans all over the world.”

The announcement follows a historic run for the original film. Released in June 2025, “KPop Demon Hunters” became the most-watched film in Netflix history, accumulating more than 500 million views worldwide, ahead of other high profile streaming offerings.

The film’s soundtrack proved just as influential. The breakout single “Golden,” performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami, won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media, becoming the first K-pop track ever to win a Grammy.

Awards recognition continued across the industry. The film won Best Animated Feature at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. It is now the frontrunner to take home the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song set to be announced March 13.

Kang has expressed her enthusiasm about returning to the vibrant world she co-created.

“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” Kang said. “There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”

Plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, though the next chapter is expected to continue Huntr/X’s supernatural adventures while expanding the franchise that has become one of the most successful animated releases of the streaming era.
