Multihyphenate superstar Jennifer Lopez just added her name to Kamala Harris’ growing list of celebrity endorsements. Appearing at Harris’ rally in Las Vegas, the “On The Floor“ songstress blasted Donald Trump’s campaign for being offensive toward her ancestry. The heated remark came after a pro-Trump comedian called Puerto Rico, her parents’ birth country, “a floating island of garbage” during a recent rally at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
“He reminded us who he really is and how he really feels,” Lopez said of the Republican presidential candidate. “It wasn’t just Puerto Ricans who were offended that day, OK? It was every Latino in this country, it was humanity and anyone of decent character.”
The “Jenny From The Block” singer continued her passionate speech with a call to action.
“This is our country, too,” Lopez said, choking back tears. “You know what? We should be emotional. We should be upset. We should be scared and outraged. We should. Our pain matters. We matter. Your voice and your vote matters.”
Lopez was at the forefront of a growing chorus of high profile Latinos who lambasted the controversial jab at Puerto Rico. Latino rap superstar Bad Bunny and reggaeton musician Nicky Jam also showed their support for Harris’ campaign in the wake of the controversy. On her part, the Vice President also launched a Spanish-language campaign addressing the remark.
“Puerto Rico is an island of scientists, poets, educators, stars and heroes,” said the ad’s narrator in Spanish. “We’re not trash, we’re more.”
With the election coming in a matter of days, swing states like Nevada have been hotly contested between the two parties. The Puerto Rico punchline added fuel to Harris’ effort to lure in Latino voters in the region.
