Iliza Shlesinger has written and will star in Chasing Summer, a new romantic comedy directed by acclaimed filmmaker Josephine Decker. According to the filmmakers, the project offers “a contemporary take on the millennial coming-of-age story,” told through a distinctly female lens.

The ensemble cast features Megan Mullally (Will & Grace), Garrett Wareing (The Long Walk), Lola Tung (The Summer I Turned Pretty), Tom Welling (Smallville), Aimee Garcia (Dexter), Cassidy Freeman (The Righteous Gemstones), and Jeff Perry (Scandal).

In Chasing Summer, Shlesinger plays Jamie, a woman who, after losing her job and boyfriend, returns to her small Texas hometown. There, she reconnects with friends and revisits the memories of one fateful high school summer that changed her life forever.

The film was shot last summer but is only now being officially announced.

“This film is for anyone who’s ever felt lost — it’s a love letter to my generation, my home state, and millennial nostalgia,” said Shlesinger. “Every day on set I was blown away by the talent of the cast and crew. I’m so proud of what we created, and I’ll carry it with me forever.”

Decker praised the joy of working on the project:

“It’s been so exciting to work on a film where fun takes the lead. Our production was a true joy, with an incredible cast and crew, and our story explores a kaleidoscopic misunderstanding about a place, its people, and our main character’s past.”

Producers Rob Guillermo, Nihaar Sinha, Ray Maiello, and Sam Pressman also celebrated the collaboration:

“The alchemy between Iliza’s emotionally resonant story and Josephine’s poetic filmmaking is something truly special. As producers, we’re proud to champion these remarkable filmmakers and this extraordinary cast as they redefine the boundaries of the genre.”
