Ahead of its debut, HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot series is already moving forward with a second season – with the studio officially greenlighting a continuation expected to adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The early renewal comes as production on Season 1 continues in the U.K., with executives reportedly confident in the long-term future of the franchise adaptation. The new series is planned as a multi-season retelling of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book fantasy saga, with each season covering one novel in greater depth than the original films.
The cast lineup includes newcomer Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Paapa Essiedu will portray Severus Snape, while John Lithgow takes on the role of Albus Dumbledore. Janet McTeer is set as Professor McGonagall, with Nick Frost cast as Hagrid.
Season 2 is expected to follow the events of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, in which Harry returns to Hogwarts only to discover that students are being mysteriously petrified after the legendary Chamber of Secrets is reopened. The story introduces key franchise elements including Tom Riddle’s diary, Dobby the house-elf and the basilisk lurking beneath the school.
HBO has described the adaptation as a more faithful exploration of the books, with longer runtimes allowing storylines and supporting characters omitted from the films to receive greater focus. Production insiders told Deadline that early work on Season 2 scripts began months ago as part of an accelerated franchise rollout.
The original Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone launched one of the biggest film franchises in history, grossing more than $7.7 billion globally across eight movies.
Season 1 of HBO’s Harry Potter series is currently scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day 2026.
