“Handmaid’s Tale” Series Finale Paves The Way for Sequel

After six seasons, Hulu’s dystopian hit series finally reached its conclusion. But that is not the end of the line for the world of the Margaret Atwood adaptation. A sequel series is now in the works. And it has a direct tie to the just ended flagship series.

Titled “The Testaments”, the sequel is based on Atwood’s 2019 follow up novel to her seminal work. Currently in development with The Handmaid’s Tale creator Bruce Miller at the helm, the story will feature none other than June’s daughter, Hannah. June’s older daughter with Jake is the one who fueled her courage to rebel against Gilead, but the two never got the reunion June had wanted until the end of the series.

“You appreciate the end of the novel and why leaving you loose ends is still satisfying because you feel like, ‘This woman is still around. She made it this far,’” says Miller. “If she didn’t make it any further, that’s okay, but what a story of her making it this far. It is the story of women through history.”

Regardless, “The Testaments” the book leaves the door open for a potential reunion between mother and daughter. That depends on how far the showrunners are willing to go though.

“When The Testaments comes out, you know certain things — you know that June’s not dying, you know Hannah is still in Gilead. There’s a whole other book about that story,” Miller explains.

Miller is spearheading the new series with Moss executive producing. It will put more focus on Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) and Agnes (Chase Infiniti), the Gilead-assigned name for Hannah, some years after the event of The Handmaid’s Tale.
