ABC is officially expanding the Grey’s Anatomy universe once again, with Ellen Pompeo set to executive produce a new Texas-set spinoff described by the network as a drama about “the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.” The untitled series, ordered straight to series for the 2026-27 television season, will shift the franchise away from Seattle and into a remote West Texas medical center where doctors face high-stakes emergencies with limited resources.
According to reports from Deadline, Variety and Entertainment Weekly, the project comes from franchise creator Shonda Rhimes and current Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis, who co-created the new series. Ellen Pompeo, who has led Grey’s Anatomy as Meredith Grey since 2005, joins as executive producer through her production banner Calamity Jane.
Unlike previous franchise offshoots such as Private Practice and Station 19, the Texas series will introduce an entirely new cast rather than centering on existing Grey Sloan Memorial characters. ABC’s official synopsis describes the show as focusing on “dedicated doctors and nurses trying to keep a struggling medical center alive in one of the most underserved regions in the country.”
The rural setting represents a dramatic tonal shift for the franchise, which has largely operated within major metropolitan hospitals for more than two decades. Industry reports suggest the new show will emphasize emergency response, rural healthcare shortages and long-distance patient care in isolated communities across West Texas.
Casting details remain under wraps, though speculation has already begun regarding possible crossover appearances from established Grey’s Anatomy characters. Fans have particularly pointed to Levi Schmitt, who relocated to Texas during the flagship show’s recent season, as a potential bridge between the two series.
With this latest move, it looks like “Grey’s Anatomy” will live forever on TV. Now entering its 23rd season, the series remains one of television’s longest-running scripted dramas and one of the network’s most recognizable global franchises.
