Four Fantastic Movies Based In & Around Casinos

133views

For someone who’s a passionate moviegoer, there’s nothing more exciting than a thrilling plot full of twists and turns, and you’ll generally find that any film with an A or even B plot around the world of gambling is bound to be enticing. With this in mind, continue reading to discover four of the most fantastic movies based in and around casinos and gambling.

1.    Ocean’s Eleven

Steven Soderbergh’s epic heist movie, Ocean’s Eleven, boasts an impressive A-list group of actors, and the plot follows Rusty Ryan (played by Brad Pitt) and Danny Ocean (played by George Clooney) as they plan the robbery of a Vegas casino.

As Ocean’s Eleven was such an expensive movie to make, each one of the cast members took a cut to their usual salaries so that production to go ahead, with Julia Roberts actually receiving her copy of the script through the post with a $20 bill attached.

2.    Casino Royale

Fan favorite Daniel Craig starred as the ultimate British spy in Casino Royale, the 2006 instalment of the James Bond franchise, which is universally regarded as the most thrilling casino-based movie ever made.

Interestingly, the book of the same name, written by Ian Fleming, is recreated plot point by plot point in this movie, unlike the majority of other Bond movies, which all tend to deviate quite heavily from canon.

3.    Bugsy

With a Best Director nomination at the Oscars for Barry Levinson, and with the mighty Warren Beatty at the helm, no movie revolving around gambling can ever reach the heady heights of 1991’s Bugsy.

Closely based on the real life of mobster Bugsy Siegel, the movie follows the Jewish entrepreneur as he works on the development of what’s now referred to as the Las Vegas Strip. Interestingly, the original location of Vegas Strip was actually where the Fremont Street Experience is now located, with casinos such as The Golden Nugget still standing and in operation in exactly the same way as in Bugsy’s time.

4.    The Hangover

The most modern movie on the list, The Hangover, was released in 2009, and follows a group of men named Alan, Doug, Phil, and Stu who travel to the party capital of Las Vegas to celebrate Doug’s stag party.

The Hangover won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical and is one of the few casino-based movies which is classified as a comedy. Although Heather Graham excelled in her role of Jade, the part was originally provisionally accepted by Lindsay Lohan, who was eventually left disappointed as she was thought to be too young for the role.

Fans of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s groundbreaking UK sitcom The Office might be interested to know that Ed Helms, who starred in The Hangover, has a recurring role in the US version.
