Donald Trump is back on UK soil in grand fashion. Wednesday marked the start of his second state visit to Britain, and this trip included a formal reception by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, royal pomp, a full ceremonial welcome—the works.
Trump and First Lady Melania arrived at Stansted and were then welcomed formally by Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton before proceeding to meet King Charles and Queen Camilla. They took part in a ceremonial carriage procession, military parades, and a state banquet hosted by the King. Trump himself called Charles an “elegant gentleman,” and said they’d been friends “for a long time.”
Protests accompanied the visit. Thousands gathered—some at Windsor, many in central London—to object to Trump’s policies, his past statements, and controversies. A projected image linking him to Jeffrey Epstein was cast onto Windsor Castle in the lead-up to the visit. Yet despite the friction, the UK and US used this moment to sign a major “Tech Prosperity Deal” worth about £31-£42 billion, involving investments from Microsoft, Google, Nvidia, and others in AI, quantum computing, and civil nuclear energy.
This visit is historic: in 2019, Trump had his first state visit under Queen Elizabeth II, which was already controversial due to widespread protests. But this second invitation from King Charles—unprecedented in modern terms—signals that the “special relationship” between the UK and U.S. is being reinforced right now.
For Britain, under PM Keir Starmer, it’s an opportunity to lock in trade, tech, and security ties; for Trump, a moment to polish the international image and re-assert influence. Whether the critics or the applause win louder echoes remains to be seen—but what’s clear is that this visit matters for how both countries want to be seen globally.
