Cristiano Ronaldo Officially Retires From The World Cup After Portugal’s Round of 16 Exit

Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup journey has come to an emotional close. Portugal’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16 on Monday ended the 41-year-old captain’s sixth and final appearance at football’s biggest tournament, just one day after he confirmed that the 2026 edition would be his last. Spain secured the victory through a late goal from Mikel Merino, bringing the curtain down on one of the most decorated World Cup careers in history.

Ahead of the knockout clash, the Al-Nassr player told reporters he had made peace with the decision. “This is my last World Cup,” he said, adding that he had “given everything” to the game and had no regrets about his international career. Although he ruled out another World Cup appearance, the Portugal star stopped short of announcing his retirement from the national team, saying he would take time before making that decision.

Ronaldo leaves the tournament with another milestone to his name. During the group stage, he became the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups, extending a record that reflects more than two decades at the highest level. Portugal entered the tournament among the favorites but struggled to create chances against Spain, whose disciplined defense held firm until Merino’s decisive strike in the closing stages. The result also led to the departure of Portugal manager Roberto Martínez.

The 2026 World Cup has also served as a farewell stage for several other iconic figures. Croatia’s Luka Modrić, Brazil’s Neymar Jr. and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer have each confirmed that this was their final World Cup campaign, bringing an end to an era that has dominated football for nearly two decades. 

Throughout his storied career, Ronaldo has won five UEFA Champions League titles, league championships in England, Spain and Italy, five Ballon d’Or awards, and led Portugal to victory at UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2019 UEFA Nations League. He also became the highest goalscorer in men’s international football and one of the sport’s most prolific scorers at club level. While the dream of lifting the FIFA World Cup ultimately eluded him, Cristiano Ronaldo leaves the game with a résumé few players are likely to match and a legacy that has inspired generations around the world.
