Celine Dion’s Olympics Return Proves Her Legacy Will Go On

859views

The Opening Ceremony of Paris Olympics 2024 might be controversial to say the least, but if there’s one thing everyone agrees with, it’s that Celine Dion’s return to stage after a four-year break was the most memorable performance of the night, closing out the event triumphantly.

Wearing a white bejeweled Dior piece, the pop diva sang Edith Piaf’s classic anthem, “L’Hymne à l’Amour” at the base of the Eiffel Tower during the climactic moment of the Opening Ceremony that – in a break from tradition – foregoes stadium to be held along the banks of the River Seine. Accompanied by a pianist underneath the gigantic Olympic rings, Dion brought the house down with her signature powerful notes and regal aura.

Just a few months ago, this mesmerizing performance seemed almost unimaginable. For four years, Dion had to halt her career after being diagnosed with the Stiff Person Syndrome, a neurological disorder that threatened to impede her ability to sing. Her harrowing health struggle was depicted in the documentary “I Am: Celine Dion,” streaming on Prime Video since last June.

“The Power of Love” songstress couldn’t have picked a bigger showcase to mark her grand return. The event was broadcasted live to hundreds of millions worldwide. Rumors of her appearance at the Paris Olympics opening began circulating when the singer was spotted around the city just days before the occasion. Delighted fans started hanging around her hotel to catch a glimpse of the diva. The Canadian singer is well loved in the country; her 1995 album “D’eux” remains the best-selling French-language album of all time.

This marks Dion’s second time performing at the Olympics after the 1996 edition in Atlanta. The  triumphant comeback stage is just the beginning. Signalling that her decades-long career will go on once again, the “Because You Love Me” singer has announced that a new Las Vegas residency is on the horizon.
