“Buffy” Reboot Pronounced Dead, Star Sarah Michelle Gellar Confirms

The stakes have officially been driven through the heart of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar has confirmed that the long-developing reboot is no longer moving forward at Hulu, bringing an abrupt end to a project that had quietly built momentum over the past year. The actress shared the news publicly and later elaborated in interviews, describing the cancellation as unexpected. “Nobody saw this coming,” she said of the decision.

The planned series, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, had been positioned as a continuation of the original show rather than a full reboot. Gellar was set to return as Buffy Summers in a recurring capacity while also executive producing. The story would have introduced a new Slayer, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, alongside a younger ensemble.

Behind the scenes, the project carried notable creative weight. Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao was attached to direct and executive produce, with writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman developing the pilot. A pilot episode had already been completed, and internal expectations pointed toward a series order before Hulu reversed course.

Gellar has since spoken candidly about the difficulties the revival faced. In interviews with outlets including People and Page Six, she described the project as an “uphill battle,” citing a lack of internal support and creative misalignment at the executive level.

The timing added to the disappointment. Gellar said she learned of the cancellation just as she was preparing to appear at the SXSW premiere of her new film Ready or Not 2, while Zhao was simultaneously in the middle of an awards-season run.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired from 1997 to 2003, remains one of television’s most influential genre series. While this iteration won’t move forward, the rights remain with 20th Television, leaving open the possibility that the Slayer could return in another form down the line.
