Bradley Cooper to Star and Direct Ocean’s Eleven Prequel Set in 1962 Monaco Grand Prix

Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper is stepping into the world of glamorous heist, taking on triple duty to star in, write and direct an untitled prequel of “Ocean’s Eleven” opposite Margot Robbie. The two will play the parents to Danny Ocean – famously played by George Clooney in the original trilogy – during their heyday in the 60’s.
The film centers on the origins of Danny’s criminal legacy, shifting focus to his parents, master thieves operating in 1960s Europe. The story unfolds during the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix, where the pair attempt a high-stakes heist set against one of the most glamorous events in motorsport.
Robbie is also producing the project through her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, continuing her involvement in developing the prequel since 2022. The project has undergone several creative shifts, with Cooper stepping in after the departure of previous director Lee Isaac Chung earlier this year.
The Monaco Grand Prix plays a central role in the film’s backdrop. Known for its concentration of wealth, celebrity presence and high-security environments, the race provides a natural setting for an Ocean’s-style caper, with locations like the Casino de Monte-Carlo and Port Hercules expected to factor into the storyline.
While full plot details remain under wraps, the prequel is positioned as an expansion of the long-running franchise that began with Ocean’s Eleven in 2001, led by George Clooney and Brad Pitt. The series has since grown to include multiple sequels and the female-centric 2018 spinoff Ocean’s 8, collectively grossing more than $1 billion worldwide.
The untitled Ocean’s prequel is currently slated for a theatrical release on June 25, 2027.
