Jennie from K-Pop supergroup Blackpink has firmly arrived on the American shore. Her debut US single as a solo artist, the upbeat dance track “Mantra” is finally out. Along with its digital release, music video for the 2-minute plus song has dropped on Youtube. In less than 24 hours since its release, it’s already garnering over 10 million views.
In the Los Angeles-set video, the 28-year-old singer can be seen dancing alongside a variety of vintage American cars and a tanker truck clad in body hugging white outfit and sky-high red boots. With those catchy beats and glamorous set, Jennie sings about female empowerment and the importance of women uplifting women. The chorus that goes “pretty girls don’t do drama” is sure to become a viral hit in no time.
Jennie’s solo outing has been hotly anticipated since it was announced that the singer had signed a record deal with Columbia Records for her foray into American music. Last year, the Chanel muse established her own label, Oddatelier, after breaking off with her former K-Pop agency, YG Entertainment. She and fellow members Lisa, Jisoo, and Rose are still signed with the agency for Blackpink’s group activities.
“Mantra” marks the first entry in a rollout to Jennie’s first US album as a soloist. Her previous solo endeavors include hit singles “Solo” and “You & Me.” She also finds success as a feature artist, with two of her featuring credits – in ZICO’s hip hop track “Spot!” and The Weeknd’s sultry serenade “One of The Girls” – also gaining global prominence.
The single marks another feat in a busy year for the musician, who attended The Met Gala early this year, closed Jacquemus’ fashion show, and scored her first solo cover in Harper’s Bazaar.
