For a while now, Beyoncé holds the record for most Grammys won by an artist. Yet, the top honors – Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Best New Artist – have always eluded her. Last Sunday, the streak broke when the pop diva finally won Album of the Year with her country release, Cowboy Carter.
“It’s been many many years,” Beyoncé said on stage at Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles. She accepted the award accompanied by Blue Ivy Carter, her eldest daughter with rap mogul Jay-Z.
The award, the ultimate prize given at the tail end of the ceremony, was presented by members of the LA County Fire Department as a tribute to the recent LA wildfires.
Cowboy Carter beat out fierce competitions that include Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet, Charli XCX’s Brat, Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft, and Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, among others. Beyoncé was previously nominated in the category four times for I Am… Sasha Fierce (2010), Beyoncé (2015), Lemonade (2017), and Renaissance (2023).
Last year, Jay-Z called out the Recording Academy for continuously snubbing his wife despite her having the most Grammys in the award’s history.
“I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than anyone, and never won album of the year,” he said of Beyoncé. “Even by your own metric that does not work. Think about that… most Grammys, never won album of the year, that doesn’t work.”
One year later, Beyoncé can finally add the coveted trophy to her veritable list of awards. To top it off, she also scored two more wins: Best Country Album for Cowboy Carter and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “II Most Wanted” (featuring Miley Cyrus).
