Australian Open 2026 Final: Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Novak Djokovic, Becomes The Youngest Player To Complete Career Grand Slam

196views

Carlos Alcaraz added a defining chapter to his career on February 1, 2026, when he defeated Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles final at the Australian Open in Melbourne. The world No. 1 rallied from a first-set loss to win 2–6, 6–2, 6–3, 7–5 at Rod Laver Arena, capturing his first Australian Open title and completing the career Grand Slam, having won all four major singles championships in tennis.

At 22 years and 272 days old, the world No. 1 became the youngest man in the Open Era to complete a career Grand Slam, eclipsing the previous benchmark set by Don Budge in 1938. The Spaniard now joins a select group of champions — Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic — to have won all four majors. His victory in Melbourne gives him seven Grand Slam titles overall and confirms his status as one of the sport’s defining players of this generation.

Djokovic, a 10-time Australian Open champion, started the match strongly and captured the first set 6-2, but Alcaraz responded with aggressive baseline play, powerful groundstrokes and tactical precision to take the next two sets 6-2 and 6-3. In the fourth set, Alcaraz broke Djokovic’s serve at 6-5 to clinch the title after a season in which both players had shown extraordinary resilience and skill. Djokovic’s bid for a record-extending 25th major fell short, and the Serbian embraced Alcaraz at the net after the final point, acknowledging the younger player’s performance.

Alcaraz’s path to the title included wins in earlier rounds over players such as Alexander Zverev, and the Spaniard managed to stay composed in a high-pressure contest that lasted over three hours. The victory also denied Djokovic an unblemished record in Australian Open finals — the 38-year-old had previously been 10-0 in Melbourne finals — and was celebrated by tennis audiences worldwide as a generational moment.

With this victory, Alcaraz firmly establishes himself at the top of professional tennis pyramid, on his way to a generational career.
