Will it be third time’s the charm for Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent?
Recently, the actress gave an interview for Deadline which seems to hint at her interest in reprising the Disney villain turned antihero. Speaking about her recent roles, which she says tended to be “traumatized,” Jolie inevitably gets asked about Maleficent.
“Maleficent was going through a lot,” the 49-year-old star said. “But she’s always Maleficent. So she’s maybe the least (traumatized).”
When asked if audiences are ever going to see her again, Jolie replied simply: “I would love that.”
Maleficent is a revisionist take on Disney’s Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of its black horned villain. The 2014 film and its 2019 sequel position Maleficent as a misunderstood being who ends up forming a motherly bond with Princess Aurora, played by Elle Fanning. As of now, there has been no plan for a third Maleficent movie in motion, but with Hollywood: never say never.
Meanwhile, Jolie is currently on the promotional trail for her latest movie, Maria, a biopic about renowned 20th century opera singer Maria Callas. The film, directed by Jackie and Spencer director Pablo Larrain, has been garnering Oscar buzz for the actress. Larrain’s last two leading ladies – Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart – both managed to get nominated as Best Actress, so anticipation is high that Jolie might three-peat the feat.
