Amazon Takes Creative Control Over James Bond

493views

The 007 will now report to Jeff Bezos. The billionaire’s Amazon MGM Studio just acquired full creative control of the James Bond franchise from long term producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. The duo’s Eon Productions – inherited from their father Albert Broccoli – has been the custodian of the iconic espionage property since its 1962 debut.

Amazon MGM Studios, Wilson and Broccoli will now run the James Bond IP through a new joint venture. The three parties will remain co-owners of the franchise but Amazon MGM will assert creative control.

As the last independently owned major IP, the takeover marks the end of an era and the beginning of an uncharted territory for the Bond franchise. In the modern film and TV landscape, this might mean potential spin-offs, prequels, and tie-ins – something the franchise has shied away from previously.

“We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theatres around the world,” said Mike Hopkins, head of Amazon Prime and Amazon MGM, in a statement. “And to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their unyielding dedication and their role in continuing the legacy of the franchise that is cherished by legions of fans worldwide.”

He added, “We are honored to continue this treasured heritage, and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.”

Commemorating the historic shift, Bezos asked fans on X who should replace Daniel Craig, who retired from the role in 2021’s No Time to Die. Among those mentioned, Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill and Loki’s Tom Hiddleston are heavy fan favorites.
